A pre-trip inspection is a systematic vehicle safety check that CDL drivers must perform before each driving shift. It covers approximately 100 items including tires, brakes, lights, mirrors, coupling devices, air lines, fluid levels, and safety equipment. Pre-trip inspection is also a required component of the CDL skills test. Failing to perform pre-trips can result in DOT violations and is a leading cause of roadside inspection failures.
